Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. This is especially important if you require a visa to travel and eventually stay in Malta.

The degree will help prepare you as a medical trainee in doing your basic surgical or anaesthetic training to develop your academic and scientific skills. It would also serve as a stepping stone to academia or also to higher surgical training, bridging the gap between the basic science and clinical fields of Medicine and Surgery.

* Study-unit SUR5300 starts in Semester 1 of academic year 2024-25 and continues up to the end of Semester 2 of academic year 2025-26.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Master of Surgery - M.Ch. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

The programme will enable you to:

  1. Describe the epidemiological principles in surgical practice.
  2. Understand the various statistical techniques and apply them to data analysis.
  3. Discuss research ethics and the application of law in terms of surgical practice.
  4. Carry out a critical appraisal of the academic literature.
  5. Explain the current knowledge of tumours including the use of tumour markers, tumour growth and spread, the surgical and other modes of treatment, and reconstruction following such treatment.
  6. Discuss the prevention and treatment of sepsis in the surgical environment, including the ward, operating theatre and intensive care setting.

  6. Discuss the prevention and treatment of sepsis in the surgical environment, including the ward, operating theatre and intensive care setting.
  7. Describe the principles of cardiovascular, lung and renal physiology and their application to the acutely ill patient.
  8. Discuss the pathophysiology and management of the patient airway.
  9. Explain the current theories of pain physiology, management of acute and chronic pain and postoperative pain control.
  10. The clinical use of non-steroidal anti inflammatories, opiates, muscle relaxants and related drugs in surgical operation.
  11. Discuss the postoperative care of patients, including drains, intravenous fluids, patient mobilization and nutrition.
  12. Discuss the prevention and treatment of common postoperative complications such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
  13. Understand the process of selection of patients for anaesthesia and contraindications for anaesthesia.
  14. Select a topic for independent study, commence background reading and draft a research proposal.
  15. Undertake laboratory or bench work under supervision, collect results and analyse them statistically.
  16. Be able to propose and discuss mechanisms to explain the results and write a dissertation of 35,000 to 40,000 words.
