Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

  1. any first cycle degree from the University of Malta or another higher education institution recognised by Senate, obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or Category II or equivalent
  2. have a good spoken and written command of the English language (IELTS 6.5 level or higher) and
  3. have a high level of proficiency in oneҳ own native language (at C2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. This is especially important if you require a visa to travel and eventually stay in Malta.

The Master in Translation and Terminology Studies is a taught programme that is aimed to help you develop core translation skills and to achieve a proficiency in recognising registers in various languages. Whether your aim is to translate English to Maltese or English to the other languages on offer, the programme provides the skills required by the current global transition industry. While undertaking research enhancing your competence in the source languages and your mother tongue, the M.A. allows you to write a dissertation on a topic that piques your interest in a very rich and fulfilling field.

TAUGHT COMPONENT

In addition to the main compulsory study-units (40 ECTS credits), students are required to register for 20 ECTS credits from one of the following specialisations:

• Audiovisual Translation (AVT)
• Literary Translation (LT)
• Translation for Specific Purposes (TSP)

In addition to the prescribed 90 ECTS credits for the course, during their first year, students may apply to the Board to register for extra study-units. Please refer to the note at the end of the programme.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master in Translation and Terminology Studies - M. Trans. - or the Degree of Master in Interpreting Studies - M. Interp. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Deepen linguistic awareness and understanding the nature of language in general
  • Equip the necessary skills for professional employment in the field of translation
  • Undertake research in subject areas for the purpose of translation
  • Enhance competence in native language and source languages
  • Develop an ability to identify and operate in a variety of language styles and registers
