Description

This master’s degree offers scientifically relevant post-graduated training in the area of Portuguese-German Studies with focus on linguistics as well as on cultural and literary studies. It is a joint teaching program that results from a close cooperation between the University of Minho (Portugal) and the University of Frankfurt / Main (Germany). The Master in German-Portuguese Studies, which grants students a double academic degree, is a unique offer in the European higher education system.
This master’s course aims at offering linguistic and intercultural training to graduate students interested in Portuguese-German studies, especially from (but not restricted to) Portuguese speaking countries (Portugal, Brazil, PALOP) and German speaking countries (Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg) .
In the current political, economic and cultural context, this master’s program fulfils increasing needs for highly proficient bilingual speakers with solid intercultural competences and specialized skills in the areas of Linguistics, Literary Science and Comparative Culture Studies, being able to naturally interact between the Lusophone and the German-speaking world.

Access to higher education

This degree offers specific graduate training to all those interested in further developing bilingual and intercultural instruction (Portuguese-speaking countries / German-speaking countries) in linguistics as well as in cultural and literary studies, in the European and international contexts in general. The degree, which has the potential to attract applicants from outside Europe, will foster not only the creation of knowledge clusters in Sciences of Language, Culture and Literature, but also the exchange of students, professionals, teachers and researchers, promoting the internationalization of teaching and research at the Institute of Arts and Human Sciences (a teaching and research unit of the University of Minho).
As part of the "Master's Dissertation" course unit, students may also compose a report based on professional experiences acquired in business or institutional settings
The double degree is awarded if the students complete the full programme of 120 ECTS / creditpoints.

Careers

The Master's in German-Portuguese Studies aims to develop bilingual and intercultural training in linguistics as well as in cultural and literary studies. Its profile transcends the traditional double logic of national cultures (according to the romantic-essentialist definition of identities). It is grounded upon a post-structuralist pattern concept that focuses on the notions of transfer, migration and hybridization in all the scientific fields involved. Its goal is the up-to-date scientific and professional training of experts in German-Portuguese relations, capable of taking action in institutional and business settings, with improved knowledge of both the German and the Portuguese languages (bilingual training), and with advanced scientific training on the relations between the Portuguese and German-speaking countries.
