Students who do not have a journalism, mass communication, or speech communication major or minor in their undergraduate studies may be required to take leveling courses as determined by the communication graduate faculty.

Test Score Required: No.

GPA: A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale on all upper-division course work.

Letters of Recommendation: 2

Resume/Curriculum Vitae: No

Admissions Essay: A writing sample from undergraduate work, such as a term paper. If significant time passed since an applicant was an undergraduate and access to previous work is inaccessible, the department will provide a writing prompt for the applicant to demonstrate writing ability at the graduate level.

Deadlines: University deadlines apply. Domestic applicants may begin in either the fall or spring semesters. International applicants may only begin in the Fall.

Additional consideration for admission will be based upon the applicant’s demonstrated commitment to his or her chosen field of study, involvement and level of responsibility in non-academic matters including extracurricular activities, employment, community service, and socioeconomic background.

Career Outlook: A master’s degree in communication improves access to many career fields. Two possibilities are teaching on the junior college level and holding a management position in a public relations firm. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job prospects for community college professors are expected to increase by 19% through 2022, which is faster than the growth anticipated for most occupations.

Career growth in the public relations field is estimated to be approximately 12% over the same time period. For more, visit Occupational Outlook Handbook - Postsecondary Teachers and Occupational Outlook Handbook - Public Relations Specialists.
