Media shape the world...

Our students will answer all your questions!

...and our understanding of that world. During this programme, you study media in a broader context and in relation to each other. You will learn about history, theory and larger social and technological contexts in which media function and interact. You will also develop academic skills, such as doing research.

Experience the Bachelor

Make your own choices

With us, you not only study the history, theory and social context of media and performance. You also learn how to analyse the form and content of a film, television, game or performance. The programme is unique in that you also study dance. At the start of the bachelor's programme, you follow introductory subjects in the fields of film, television, new media, theatre, dance and culture and society. After that, you choose from a wide range of interesting courses.

to the Study programme

I was looking for a Bachelor's programme that has film studies, but also history and intermediality, which kind of gives you this broad concept for internships and masters. It gives you a lot of good background for the future.

Eye for the professional field

During your study, you will also come into contact with practice! You will meet programmers, producers, reviewers, dramatists and policymakers. These are the kinds of positions this programme will prepare you for. You can also choose to do an internship. Utrecht is an excellent place for this, with all its stages, festivals, young cultural entrepreneurs and Hilversum Media Park around the corner. Think of the Dutch Film Festival, Impakt, SPRING, Café Theatre Festival, various cinemas, its own theatre, but also many nice smaller theatres such as Theater Kikker. Utrecht is also bursting with young game designers, theatre groups, film and PR companies.

Why Media and Culture at Utrecht University?

Because...

  • you can also develop yourself creatively at Parnassos Cultural Centre or Studio-M of the University. Here you will find all kinds of courses and workshops in the field of theatre, music, visual arts, film and photography.

  • you can follow honours programmes. This is extra challenging education, especially for motivated and talented students.

  • you can become a member of Study Association AKT. Besides parties and drinks, AKT organises interesting lectures, symposia, film screenings, workshops and open stages. And what about AKT's own filmgala?
