Degree in Applied Physics

Bachelor of Science
A professor teaching

WPI’s degree in Applied Physics blends physics, engineering, and mathematics, guiding you to understand the common threads among the principles and theories of each and apply them to practical devices and systems.

Value Proposition Description

Hands-on projects challenge students to combine physics and math theories with engineering design and apply it to real-world problems. You might use all you learn about optics to craft better telescope components or to build an improved microscope. You might also use your understanding of programming and machining to develop a particular or improved software product.

applied physics

The degree in Applied Physics encourages students to solve problems using a combination of physics, engineering, and mathematics. Your major course work provides fundamental studies in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, modern physics, statistical and quantum physics, and laboratory experimental methods.

You’ll use your studies to follow your interests in areas like Physics, Computational Physics, Optics, Electromagnetism, or Nuclear Science and Engineering. With hands-on projects, you’ll solve tough problems using real-world applications of physics principles to challenges in various engineering disciplines. Or delve into specific topics like Nanoscience or Biophysics with faculty research groups.

Project-based Learning

At WPI you’ll apply your classroom knowledge to real-world problems through project-based learning, the cornerstone of the WPI experience. Project teams face challenges and opportunities as diverse as researching and improving protective equipment for football players to streamlining a process for workers to use sounds created from reflected light to observe sub-quality items in a production line.

More Value

Whether it’s real-world work experience through a co-op or internshipearning a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in four or five years through the BS/MS program, or integrating your coursework with your extracurricular interests through Major and a Mission, there are many ways you can make the most out of your time at WPI.
